  Synopsis

Jen is a simple, geeky girl from the midwest that moved to Los Angeles for excitement and adventure. She's a junior accountant at the same company as her fashionista cousin, Crystal, who wants Jen to fit in instead of embarrassing her with her t'shirt and jeans fashion and quirky sense of humor.

The only way Jen would wear the Manolo Blahnik shoes and fancy dress, was for a hefty bribe so she could purchase a 1977 Star Wars original one sheet. Crystal happily complies.

The fancy designer clothing gets her noticed, gives her a new sense of self-esteem and is the same exact day she gets caught up in an international money laundering scheme, which has the CIA protecting her while the mob is out to kill her.

The story behind "A Day in the Life of Plain Jen"

Carrie Lynn Certa

I always fantasized about being a superhero. Saturday morning cartoons weren't complete without my cape and soon adopted the nickname "Dyno Daughter" for such caped events.

As things panned out, I never became a super hero. For my super powers of invisibility or strength or to control the elements simply never came to fruition. Instead, my dry sense humor and 'nice rack' was what seemed to have "saved the day" from time to time. And since those two things can't buy you notoriety and the love of the commissioner, I wrote about it in a screenplay.

This short is actually based on a feature which had been plaguing my brain and stuck between fantasy and what could truly be a kick ass action adventure film. I knew that being in the short was the only way I could live out my childhood fantasy so I instantly wrote it up and suckered Mark Shelton to direct it. The feature length "Plain Jen" easily came to the page and talks of who's to play... well, me... is just another fun adventure to this whole Hollywood business.

In the spirit of the holiday season, The Day in the Life of Plain Jen received a Christmas miracle (I'm Jewish, so don't be offended!). Manolo Blahnik has approved our use of the their name and shoes in our film. This is the stuff that dreams and Sarah Jessica Parker are made of.  Thanks to Carrie, she made this happen after two months of working her producer mojo.  The lesson here kids is never be afraid to ask.   In other news, our star has started her workouts so she will be in tip top shape for filming.  I, as Co-Producer, friend and therapist will be joining her in some of this craziness. What we won't do for our craft!  More news to come...

Here I am. Weeks out side the 'big shoot'. This is the script that started the entire production series and I'm finally doing it.  Well, doing more than I ever intended and thrilled about it!  Being an 'action star' was an inside joke but if you know me, I take my jokes quite seriously.

Being the 'action star' sure does hurt! I've been watching what I eat and calorie counting and working out and ouch! I'm hungry!  In the end, I'm truly happy with the progression of the short. Sure it's had it bumps in the road... like a delay... and a push... and another delay... but... we're here and it's happening.

Crystal and Plain Jen. (Mary LeGault & Carrie Certa)

The Director, Mark Shelton, and I'm getting into character. Yeah, I'm NOTHING like Plain Jen.

What an excellent day of shooting! We wrapped out Crystal (Mary LeGault) and introduced the "after" Jen with her new makeover.

It's was a long day at almost 14 hours for me, but it was well worth it. As an actor, you can never tell if 'it' is working for the camera and so we need a little reassurance that the director is getting what he wants. Mark isn't one for praise when we're in the thick of it, so you must know that no news is good news and I witnessed that myself when we reviewed the playback and all of us were in stitches laughing.

But next, the hard part. The fight scene. I'm already black and blue from today's shoot but next Saturday and Sunday, ouch, ouch OUCH! Kicking butt is painful business but I'm so looking forward to the challenge.

What a world wind! It's a character wrap for Matthew Smith on "Plain Jen".

I have enjoyed the whole process of shooting and look forward to how far this train goes. It all started in an office set meeting new people on the cast and crew who I am bound to be friends with for life.

CUT TO:

Me... healing from the bruises caused by the fight scene.  I have a new found respect for action stars and the work they put into the stunts, as well as, acting.  It becomes a full personal workout, mentally and physically.

It was a pleasure working with Carrie Certa, an 'A' type personality with no quit in her.  That is what it takes to make it in this crazy business film.  She is a very talented actress, as well as, producer.

Mark Shelton, the director, in addition to being a very talented director is a character in a half!  Always with a quick joke to keep the stress on set as light as possible. (It does get kind of stressful sometimes)  Especially when dealing with big camera moves where everything is moving... actors, steadicam rig & operator, lights that are in the way during one part of the shot but need to be there for another.  Being in a shot like that is like being on the insides of a machine... one thing out of place and it is... CUT... Take 97!  Hahah.

The crew was great! I could name everyone but you can see everyone on the credits on this very website.  I do not want to leave anyone out!! Lots of people have to come together to make something like this a success.  I believe we have done that and I look forward to the premiere!

All my best,

Kyle Hester

It's over. It's FINALLY over. The script that began it all, ends it all with picture wrap on Plain Jen and with a very excited cast and crew. What's made this experience even better for all involved is the fact that I already have a potential investor for the feature AND a webseries based on these character PRIOR to the short film. It's a prequel webseries, if you will. And one of my good friends at ABC is keeping her eye on our progress. THIS is what it's all about folks... shorts leading to features and it's even better when it happens BEFORE the press releases go out!

We shot our first Webisode this past weekend so keep an eye out for new webpages going up in about two weeks with those mini-stories.

Thank you all again for your wonderful work, support and help on this for it looks like its going to pay off in more ways than you imagined. See you on the red carpet!

Hollywood kisses,

Carrie

This has had to be one of the most painful edits I've ever experienced. Not only because of the passion and the feature film behind the short but because of creative differences with the director. We've gone through four editors and, though each editor has brought something to the table it was never "just right". As a perfectionist, I kept searching for the perfect Pro-editor who takes pride in his work and is willing to put in the time to make this short what it deserves to be and I've finally found that editor in Carl DeGrazio. I can not thank him enough for coming on last minute and saving this film. Once the color, audio and score is laid in, I know we'll all have a great time watching this little action flick.

Thank you everyone!
