| The story of Smiley | |
| By Carrie Lynn Certa | |
| :) , or better known as "Smiley", was originally written as a stage play back in 2004 after a real life experience of miscommunication of a flirtatious smiley and winky emoticon. "Smiley" was originally performed on the New York stage at TSI, an off-Broadway theater, which specializes in work shopping up and coming writers. | |
| "Smiley" was never intended to be turned into a short film but when a spot opened up for Ursa's December Production Series and the perfect four actors walked into the audition room, Carrie dusted off the script and instantly re-wrote it for the screen. |

As Producer of :) (Smiley) I am happy to report that it is moving along very well. We have four amazing actors and most of our crew in place. We have our second reading this Sunday at one of our shooting locations, The Amsterdam Café, which is where, I am told, is the same location as our director’s first film “SpyForLove”. It was not planned to shoot at the café, we just lucked out! Our second location was also easily obtained and we’ll be shooting THREE of our shorts using the office location. All for the bargain basement price of …. nada.
| The crew, actors and vendors have been so helpful, which is not common in such a production savvy city. We are counting our blessings! In a spirit of giving back, we hold several of our meetings at the Amsterdam Café and it is also the location of our first networking party within the production series. | |
| Yesterday was our first location scout with our DP, Director, 1st and 2nd ADs and of course, myself. The shot list is almost complete and the only thing we need now, is a good Production Designer! Our visual effects are looking amazing which only get us excited all over again. Can’t wait to start filming! | |

| Well, it looks like we missed a step with the blogs but, eh, no one complained so I'm not going to stress about it.
Saw the first rough cut yesterday and the concept is working. It's not your stereotypical film and I was a bit concerned the stage to screen story wouldn't work. We have Rough Edit #2 due in two weeks where I can really see if the laugh lines and concept works now that we've solidified the tone and pace.
This is the nail biting stage for me so excuse me if I'm not overly excited like I am on set. :)

| In the can. That's right, "Smiley" is completed. It was one of the easier shoots in the production series but it had its issues with a two hour delay in the camera and lights being set up on the first day and then the Burbank Airport on the second day. (For some odd reason, planes are not something we as producers can control.) Either way, I think what we have is going to be a terrific film. | |
| We've already had our first post-production meeting and it was great to see the editor, composer and SFX Supervisor excited about the project. THIS is the fun part and I can't wait to share it with all of you.
Happy Holidays! | |

| Post production is going swimmingly! I'm already on the second edit and we're getting very close.
It's been a true learning experience because it's so hard to translate stage to the screen. I'm not sure if I've been successful in this adaptation but as with "SpyForLove", I have a feeling Deon Vozov will once again, save the day.
I do have to make a special mention of my new BTS editor Javier Rivera who with one edit, nailed it. I will be posting that in the next couple of weeks for all of you to view.
Thank you again to everyone who's help with these productions! I couldn't do it without you.

| Ahhh! Okay, so shorts are here to be a learning experience. I got it and I can admit when I messed up. My original concept for the edit simply wasn't working. It lost all the funny in the script with too many 'things' to look at!
So I've started from scratch. It's been quite frustrating since 1) I'm not the fastest editor in the world and 2) I am very picky when I do edit. Picky as in, frame by frame, type stuff. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to edit myself but alas, here I am.
The new edit is working. I've had to cut a few lines to keep the flow of the story going and the funny is creeping back into the edit. I am happier and hopeful that this final edit, with the help from Wesley - the editor of "Undisconnected" -, is one which will have the audiences laughing with familiarity since we've ALL had conversations and miscommunications due to the loveable Smileys.

| Smiley has been done for awhile which is shocking with all of the graphics needed for this short to come to life. One very important lesson I learned was Blu-ray... it's the way to go. This is a short that really does need to be seen in HD. I had NO idea how bland our SD life was. Now I just need to wait to hear what format we're premiering in because, not just Smiley, but all of these films look amazing in HD.
See you on July 28th! |
