  Synopsis

Morris Gammons is a good man. A good hard working man who loves his wife and new baby. All he has to do is turn in 'the numbers' to his boss. But in today's inescapable technology age, he can't find a moments peace, which drives him over the edge.

The story behind "Undisconnected"

By Steven Karageanes

"Undisconnected" was originally written three years ago, out of my frustration as a doctor having to carry a pager, use a smartphone, check a work email that didn't link with my personal email and have three different office numbers. Other hospitals gave doctors Pal Treos, which everyone thought was noble and wonderful -- until they realized that the phone were actually electronic tethers, making it impossible to escape the office. So, I wrote about man versus technology, but with technology playing dirty.

“Undisconnected” is happening too smoothly to be named Undisconnected…. but doesn’t that mean, connected?

Yesterday we went on a location scout for the two main locations. Our DP and Director are completely in sync with each other on how we are going to make this happen. We have a great cast that met this past Tuesday for the read through and we were all rolling with laughter. There is no doubt that this short is going to be great!

One of the biggest challenges is finding a carrier pigeon and it looks like we are close to securing our animal friend. But the craziest thing we need to do is purchase two urinals. Never thought I’d ever have to say that! As a Producer, it’s crazy sometimes what you have to do to get a project done and done right. But you do what you have to do!

Wow… what was that?!?!

I’ve finally recuperated from the night that was the shoot but reflecting on it, wow. Every production has its highs. Every production has its lows. This was no exception. Giselle, who is the coordinator on another short, stepped up for “Undisconnected” and got our carrier pigeon, who is named Lucky.  (Wish she had brought us more luck!)

(Carrie Certa, Melissa Friedman, Lucky, Magic and Rick Steadman)

The night started out with a few frustrated tears, which was a layover from the previous night. But my support team quickly went into action to make sure things moved quickly. Graeme and Karl, the AD staff, was fantastic and I know if there were not there, things would have been a whole lot worse.

Morris’ big exit scene from the film took a full six hours to shoot. That was half our day in the office location… and it’s now midnight. Our saving grace was having a second camera last minute that Co-Producer, Melissa, was able to wrangle. This big run around the office also resulted in a badly bruised foot on our lead actor, Rick, from tripping on his pants as he strips down in the scene. A heart stopping moment, to say the least. This guilt ridden producer is still terribly sorry days later. Rick stuck it out as he hobbled around and even did a couple more runs around the office. (Please give him a hug when you see him!)

But the show went on and we were now in the Morris’ office for the rest of the film and the ten-hour planned day turned in to twelve very quickly. The fog spray used to fog the windows to avoid their high reflection ended in a hell of a clean up job. The actors, the PA and myself included, took a good scrub to the three windows affected. Then a coffee pot got broken and to end it all, a circuit breaker blew and we had no way of getting to the box to fix it before the office occupants returned.

Melissa and I tried to stick it out until someone arrived to take care of it but both of us were dog tired and headed back to her house for an hour’s nap before continuing on with the next day. (We were already running on 3 hours sleep from the shoot/night before so running on fumes is an accurate description for both of us.)

But that’s the bad news.

(Carrie Certa, Mike Hover, Devin Daley, Brian Dare and Graeme Finlayson)

The good news is… the actors nailed it. We were all laughing between takes and even at four in the morning, were rolling when Cupid, Mike Hover, hits on one of our leads and when the eager office staff comes running to Morris’ aid but is quickly shut down. We had to take a breather between takes for people to stop laughing. (This scene is filled with our fabulous hero of a crew: Melissa (Co-Producer), Graeme (1st AD), Lisa (Wardrobe), Karl (2nd AD) and Amy (AC) along with our star actors.

(Justin Pease and then the cast and crew helping with the window clean up!)

But I must say, our hero of the shoot was a PA. Yep, a PA. There are no small jobs, people. Justin Pease was on top of everything and worked so hard to get the fogging agent off the windows. He’s already on the top of my list of hires on my next job and I hope yours too!

  And that is a WRAP!!!

This past weekend I was able to shoot my last pickups on Undisconnected. WHAT a feeling.  I received a little extra help from Steven over at BFX Imageworks to get the last shot of my dreams, even though it took a frozen actor to do it!

Once again, rain was not our friend but to my good fortune, the torrential downpour stopped long enough for our 6:30 am call. Poor Rick had to lay in his boxers on the frozen ground to get the last shot of the film but he was trooper and did it.

To end our amazing shoot was a gift from the heavens... snow. As we were wrapping the gear we were greeted with the most beautiful of snow falls. The big puffy flakes had all of us laughing, texting, calling and dancing. It was a wonderful way to end the shoot.

And so, to end this blog (until the edit blog) I unveil the movie poster.

Enjoy!

I have to say that I've just seen the best rough cut I think I've ever seen. Wesley didn't deliver a rough but more of a fine cut. I was rolling with laughter. It was brilliant!  I really can not wait to show you come July!

Now on the the SFX, the REALLY fun part!!

You'd think I'd be having a bad day with today being tax day and all but the reality is, I'm extremely happy!  Lumeni Productions will be finalizing the graphics on "Undisconnected" for the Overboard sequence!!

I'm super excited to see how this project ends up!

It's tough being a perfectionist. Frame by frame corrections can take hours or days to complete. Today was one of those days. I truly believe "Undisconnected" is worthy of a top tier film festival screening but that means that I need to do my own work and make it as perfect as I can get... and that's what I've been doing. Only one more fix which I can't do is finally completed. Unfortunately, my free favors have run out so I'm allowing myself to walk away with a solid short (except that one shot, ug).

I am very proud of the work the actors, the editor, the colorist... everyone, has put into this short. We all will be holding up our heads high on July 28th.
